Fire Investigation

Ranger was a black Labrador Retriever owned and trained by Roger Means. Roger acquired Ranger as a puppy and started his training as an Accelerant Detection K-9 in May of 2000. Ranger was certified in October of 2000 using the ATF K-9 Certification Test. The two worked as a team with local Fire and Police and also with S.L.E.D. (SC State Law Enforcement Division).

Fire Investigation & K-9

Roger and Lucy are certified as an Accelerant K-9 team annually. Roger is a Battalion Chief at North Spartanburg on B-Shift and assigned duty of Lead Fire Investigator for them. Lucy is a 3 year old yellow Labrador Retriever who is owned and trained by Chief Means. Lucy was adopted by Chief Means from Lowcountry Labs Rescue in Charleston S.C.  Chief Means started training Lucy for accelerant detection in October of 2015. After months of training Lucy was certified as an accelerant K-9 in March 2016 by the American Work Dog Association (AWDA), Present annual certification with American Police Canine Association (APCA). Lucy gives a passive alert by sitting and pointing with her nose to an accelerant. Chief Means and Lucy train daily and Lucy is awarded with food when she finds an accelerant. They assist other fire department in surrounding area, State and local law enforcement, Spartanburg County Fire Investigation Team, and other surrounding investigators public and private. This is Roger’s fourth accelerant K-9 he has trained and handled since starting his first K-9 in 1994.
