Employment benefits offered at North Spartanburg Fire District

The North Spartanburg Fire District always strives to provide our employees with a detailed benefits package.  Currently, we offer the following:

  • Proactive Shift Scheduling

  • Our three operational shifts work a “Portland” 1/3 2/3 shift schedule.

  • Salary Stipends for Training

  • Beginning in July of 2026, we will offer annual salary stipends based on your level of EMS training, in addition to your base salary. EMT stipend $1,000; Advanced EMT $2,000; Paramedic $4,000 per year

  • 72 hours of PTO issued on the date of hire

  • Time off is important to family life and your mental health as a firefighter.  We want to ensure all employees can take time off when needed.

  • PTO accrual

  • Paid time off is accrued biweekly with paychecks. Bi-weekly accrual is based on longevity with the department

  • Each January, current employees receive a Longevity PTO bonus in the form of additional hours based on years with the department. This bonus ranges from 24 hours to 120 hours based on longevity.

  • Fully funded family coverage medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • The department covers the full cost of your medical insurance.  Medical Insurance is through Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Vision and Dental are also provided through Renaissance Insurance. All the coverages are 100% paid by the district. No deduction comes from your bi-weekly payroll.

  • Department-paid Short-Term and Long-Term Disability Insurance.

  • This benefit is fully paid by the department for each employee. If you are injured while off duty with the department, we want to provide our employees with resources that ensure their income continues while they recover.

  • Department funded $25,000 life insurance policy.

  • The department provides each employee with a free $25,000 life insurance policy. NSFD also allows employees to purchase additional life insurance for themselves, their spouses, and dependents. Additional coverage for dependents is payroll-deductible.

  • Supplemental Accident and Sickness policy

  • This policy, provided through VFIS, provides additional coverage to employees for injuries and certain illnesses that occur while on duty.

  • Retirement

  • North Spartanburg participates in the “PORS” (Police Officers Retirement System) through the State of South Carolina.

  • Educational Benefits

  • The department values education and training.  The department has a well-funded training budget that sets aside money for training classes and conferences for travel.  Per-diems and department vehicles are provided for overnight training.

  • We also value higher education. In addition to your salary, we will pay each employee an additional $1,000 per degree (Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctorate).

  • Longevity Benefit-Retirement Incentive Package

  • NSFD values long-term relationships with our employees. Employees who retire through PEBA from NSFD and have served as full-time employees for 15 or more years will receive a retirement benefit based on their years of service. Serve 15 years and receive $10,000, serve over 20 years and receive $20,000, serve over 25 years and receive $25,000 at the time of your retirement.

  • Employee Relocation Assistance

  • If you are offered employment with North Spartanburg, live more than 100 miles from our headquarters, and are relocating to this area, we can provide up to $5,000 of reimbursement for expenses incurred during your relocation.

  • Department Uniforms

  • We provide each employee with uniforms and boots for station wear. Employees are provided with Pro-Warrington station boots, and Class A uniforms are issued after completing probation.

  • Holiday Pay

  • For department-recognized holidays, Employees working a shift will receive time-and-a-half pay on the holiday.

  • Parental Leave

  • Planning a family? We assist employees by providing 72 hours of additional PTO to employees at the time of birth/adoption, and allow employees to use their regular PTO for up to 12 weeks of leave with their new family.

  • Bereavement Leave

  • Losing a loved one is challenging. Our department assists employees with deaths in their immediate families with up to 48 hours of additional PTO time so they can process their grief and be with family during their time of loss
